Family with Uninvited Geese

Tuesday during one of our outdoor family portrait sessions about a dozen wild Canada Geese wandered into the shot. This was a first for me, being photobombed by geese. The geese wandered through and I just kept snapping, hoping to get a lucky shot.

Our Ottawa photo studio is re-opening tomorrow, June 12. So I'm restocking the studio fridge with water, preparing for a hot week of grad photos and business headshots.

(World Famous, World Traveling Master photographers NEVER stock the studio fridge with plain ordinary boring water 😁)

How This Entrepreneur Overcame Recession & Other Small Business Challenges

Genbook did this interview with me about Spencer Studio celebrating our 40 years in business, it came out today. What can I say, I love the "exposure."

Really? We Have a Patron Saint of Photographers?

I was fooling around on the internet today and discovered there is a patron saint of photographers. Yes really. You'd think after being a world famous, world traveling, master photographer in the photography business for forty years this would have come up. I messaged a few of my photographer friends, nobody knew.

Self isolated for what... three weeks now? Tired of Netflix, tired of Three's Company re-runs and of course tired of the news my attention landed on Google and the photography things I could find there.

There she was Saint Veronica, patron saint of photographers.

Photographing Stool Samples

My studio is temporarily closed #StupidCoronavirus so I have no photos of people to upload. But I thought you might enjoy seeing photos of my most recent stool samples.

Studio in Self Isolation

I got to say that it's slap in the face to have your business, your profession,  and your life's work to be deemed "Non-Essential" by the government. Hopefully after the mandated COVID19 self isolation we will all emerge to a stronger, wiser and kinder world.

Avoid the "Dewy Look" on Professional Business Headshots

I know that this "Dewy look" is a popular trend but we have been asking clients to avoid it when they come in for professional business headshots.

Removing blemishes or reducing lines, wrinkles or bags under the eyes is a piece of cake in Photoshop. But removing large areas of shine takes much longer and  often looks retouched.

I'm sure dewy looks fine in glamour shots but it's not a good look in professional business headshots.
We prefer clients tone it down themselves with their own makeup but we find blotting paper does a nice job so we always keep some on hand.

Fixing Collar Gaps With Liquify Tool

Photographers are always learning.

Sometimes with headshots the jacket is to large you get that gap between the shirt collar and jacket. I don't always catch it during the shoot and have to fix it later. I use Photoshop and cut and paste the jacket, then use the Transform/Warp tool to warp it back into shape. But just couldn't get it to work for me this time.

So I gave it a try with the Liquify tool and just "pushed" the collar of the jacket in, only took about 5 seconds.  I have been using the Liquify tool to fix unwanted bulges, like "muffin tops" or necks that hang our over too tight collars.
Using the liquify tool seems much faster than my old technique. Got to love Photoshop.
